Use of Hempcrete in Sustainable Construction

Authors/Creators

Description

Conventional building materials such as concrete, steel, and fired bricks require high energy consumption during manufacturing and contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution. Sustainable construction practices are therefore increasingly focusing on renewable, biodegradable, low-carbon, and energy-efficient materials for reducing environmental impacts and improving building sustainability. Hempcrete has emerged as one of the most promising bio-based construction materials due to its lightweight nature, thermal insulation properties, carbon sequestration capability, and environmental sustainability. Hempcrete is a composite material produced by mixing hemp hurds with lime-based binders and water to create a lightweight, breathable, and eco-friendly building material. This article presents a comprehensive review of the use of hempcrete in sustainable construction, including material composition, manufacturing process, mechanical properties, thermal performance, environmental benefits, structural applications, smart building integration, and future innovations. The study examines applications of hempcrete in residential buildings, insulation systems, wall construction, green infrastructure, and climate-resilient architecture. The findings indicate that hempcrete significantly improves energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, carbon reduction, and sustainability performance while supporting circular economy principles and environmentally responsible construction practices. The article also discusses implementation challenges, economic considerations, technological advancements, and future trends in hemp-based sustainable construction materials.
