English title: Presidents of the Municipality of Čačak (1944–2010)

The article presents the biographies of the presidents of the Municipality of Čačak from 1944 to 2010. Through their professional and political careers, it traces the development of the town and municipality in the second half of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century. Municipal presidents are presented as public figures who, under different political systems, represented the local community, administered municipal affairs and mediated between citizens, party structures, state bodies and economic interests.

The article shows that the office of municipal president was not only administrative. It also had a strong symbolic role. The municipal president embodied the local community within the representative system, spoke and acted on its behalf, while his biography often reveals deeper relations between family background, wartime legitimacy, education, professional expertise, political affiliation and relational networks.

In the post-war and socialist period, municipal presidents were connected with reconstruction, industrialization, infrastructure, education, culture, health care, sport and municipal systems. In the period of late socialism and post-socialist transformation, their role became increasingly tied to economic crisis, the breakup of Yugoslavia, the renewal of multiparty politics, the refugee crisis, sanctions and the search for a new position of Čačak within a changed state and political framework.

Through a sequence of biographies, the article shows how the history of a town can be read through the people who formally represented it. The presidents of the Municipality of Čačak were not only office holders, but also indicators of changes in local government, elite structures, political culture, urban development and the collective identity of the town.
