How to prevent corruption in a democratic country:
Authors/Creators
Description
Corruption remains one of the most persistent obstacles to democratic governance, economic
development, and public trust. Although democratic systems are designed to ensure accountability
through elections, checks and balances, and public participation, corruption continues to affect many
democracies across the world. This paper examines the causes of corruption in democratic countries and
evaluates effective strategies for its prevention. Using a qualitative review of existing literature,
international governance reports, and comparative case studies, the study identifies key anti-corruption
mechanisms, including strengthening the rule of law, promoting transparency, ensuring judicial
independence, improving public sector accountability, enhancing civic participation, and adopting digital
governance systems. The findings suggest that successful anti-corruption efforts require a comprehensive
and multi-dimensional approach that combines institutional reforms with active citizen engagement. The
paper concludes that sustainable corruption prevention depends not only on legal enforcement but also on
a culture of integrity, transparency, and democratic accountability.
