Indigenous Food Production Systems of Jah Hut Communities in the Krau Forest and Wildlife Reserve: Sustainability, Food Sovereignty and Food Security
Authors/Creators
Description
Conference presentation slides presented at the Sustainable Agroecology, 1st Workshop, held at Kassel University, Witzenhausen, Germany, on 17 to 18 July 2023. The presentation introduces doctoral research on the Indigenous food production systems of the Jah Hut communities in and around the Krau Forest and Wildlife Reserve in Peninsular Malaysia. It examines the relationships between Indigenous cosmology, agroecology, wellbeing, food sovereignty, and food security, and analyses how shifting cultivation, home gardens, rubber, and oil palm practices are changing under pressures such as land tenure insecurity, conservation policy, resettlement, and market integration. Drawing on household survey data and adapted farm sustainability indicators, the presentation argues that Jah Hut traditional agriculture retains important sustainability attributes but is under serious pressure, with implications for livelihoods, cultural continuity, and future food sovereignty.
