Eudorella splendida Zimmer, 1902

Holotype.

South Georgia • ♂; Süd-Georgien [South Georgia, Royal Bay, Moltke Harbour; Deutsche Polarstation auf Süd-Georgien 1882 / 83; 54°30'58"S, 36°0'45"W; -54.51611, -36.0125]; 1883; Karl von den Steinen leg.; tiefer Ebbestrand [low-tide beach]; ZMH -K-016074.

Remarks.

Băcescu (1988) reported the holotype (♂) deposited at the ZMH (no collection number included). The ZMB Collection does not include Zimmer’s material of Eudorella splendida (personal communication Antje Schwiering and Kristina von Rintelen, ZMB). In Zimmer’s (1902) original description, no holotype was designated; however, his description is based on a single juvenile male, which will be the holotype fixed by monotypy (ICZN Article 73, section 73.1. 2). Inner labels include Zimmer’s handwritten note “ Gelb. Tiefe Ebbe. Hinten angehakt, forwährend auf nieder pendelnd ” [Yellow. Low tide. Hooked at the back, constantly swinging downward]. This note is also mentioned in the species original description. Together with the holotype, a second specimen was found in the ZMH holdings, this specimen is also mentioned in Zimmer’s publication “ Ein zweites, stark defektes Exemplar vom gleichen Fundort gehört offenbar derselben Art an ” [A second, heavily damaged specimen from the same site appears to belong to the same species]. The second specimen we found in the lot is what Zimmer described in his paper: an immature, heavily damaged specimen. Given the specimen’s condition and the fact that it is only tentatively assigned to the same species, this individual was separated from the original lot and assigned a new collection number (ZMH -K-067684), and it is not included as a paratype in this work.

Diagnosis.

Pseudorostral lobes in subadult ♂ with tuft of setae on the top, in ♀ and young ♂ the front margin smoothly truncate down to the sinus which has an almost smooth median prominence and is bounded below by a horizontal tooth followed by a smooth lower margin. In adult ♂ the front margin is strong convex, projecting well in front of the single small tooth which defines it below. Pleonite 5 projecting a pair of long setae over telsonic segment. Antenna 1, flagellum tri-articulated (female), ♂ four-articulated (male), with accessory flagellum as long as 2 articles of the main flagellum combined. Uropod, peduncle subequal in length to exopod; endopod longer, with terminal spine fused to article 2 (after Stebbing 1913).

Distribution.

South Atlantic Ocean, South Georgia Islands and Indian Ocean, Kerguelen Islands, 0–310 m depth (Băcescu 1988).
