Description

Zimmeriana lasiodactylum (Zimmer, 1914)

described as Dic lasiodactylum; Zimmer 1914.

Syntype.

Australia • ovig. ♀; Western Australia, Fremantle, Cockburn Sound, South Channel, Hamburger südwest-australische Forschungsreise 1905 exped., stat. 051; 6.5–8 m depth; 18 June 1905; J. Wilhelm Michaelsen leg.; Felsboden [rocky bottom]; ZMH -K-016033.

Remarks.

Zimmer (1914) described the species based on two specimens, one female (ZMH -K-016033) and a subadult male (ZMB 18495 — see information below). However, in his work, he did not designate a holotype or paratype. The majority of his species description is based on the female, although male figures are also included. Later, Băcescu (1992) reported a lectotype deposited at the ZMB (ZMB 18495) as follows: • subA. ♂, Western Australia, Champion Bay von Geraldton [Geraldton, Champion Bay]; Hamburger südwest-australische Forschungsreise 1905 exped., stat. 031; 3.5–14 m depth; 12 July 1905; J. Wilhelm Michaelsen leg.; teils felsig, teils Sandboden mit Pflanzen [partly rocky, partly sandy bottom with vegetation]. We confirmed the presence of this specimen in the ZMB Crustacea Collection (personal communication from Antje Schwiering and Kristina von Rintelen, ZMB), which is registered as a type, not as a lectotype, as reported by Băcescu (1992). The ICZN on lectotype designation (Article 74.7. 3) states that “ to be valid, a lectotype designation must have an express statement of deliberate designation … (such as “ lectotype hereby designated ”, “ lectotype by present designation ”) … (merely citing a specimen as “ lectotype ” is insufficient). Following this, the lectotype designation of Băcescu (1992) for the Berlin material does not meet the requirements of the ICZN, as it does not include an express statement of designation but only cites the specimen as lectotype. The same ICZN article (Article 74.7; Recommendation 74 G) states that “ the designation of lectotypes should be done as part of a revisionary or other taxonomic work to enhance the stability of nomenclature, and not for mere curatorial convenience ”. Following this, and as the purpose of this catalogue is merely curatorial, we refer to the material of Zimmeriana lasiodactylum from the Hamburg and Berlin collections as syntypes until a taxonomic expert reviews the material and makes a proper designation.

Diagnosis.

Carapace with 1 pair of posterodorsal swellings and weak lateral sulcus. Pereopod 1, carpus equal to basis. Pereopod 2, carpus pereopod twice merus length. Telson equal in length to uropod peduncles, without terminal setae. Uropod, endopod tri-articulated, shorter than exopod (after Gerken 2001).

Distribution.

West Australia and South Australia, Tasmania, 2–23 m depth (Băcescu 1992; Gerken 2001).
