Description
This qualitative research employed a phenomenology design in exploring the preparedness and response of Senior High School students of Kidapawan City National High School in relation to disasters. The study aimed to explore the views of the students before the occurrence of the disaster, their experiences and encounters during the time of the disaster, and their reflections after the disaster- related activities. The data gathering methods used were in-depth interviews (idi) and focus group discussions (fgd), and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings showed that the students were prepared through earthquake drills, school organizations, and teacher guidance. However, during the actual occurrence of the disaster, the students experienced panic, fear, crowding, and the inability to apply their knowledge of safety procedures. After the disaster, the students reflected that presence of mind, correct execution of drills, and better evacuation systems are essential. This study concludes that despite the students’ awareness and basic preparedness, their emotional and environmental conditions influence their disaster response.
