Description

Abstract. This study examines the emergence of the pun (calambur) in Spanish
culture and analyzes its genre characteristics within literary and oral traditions. The
research explores the historical development of calambur as a linguistic and stylistic
device, its cultural significance, and its role in Spanish humor, poetry, and rhetoric.
Using qualitative textual analysis, the study investigates representative examples
from Spanish literature and folklore. The findings reveal that calambur emerged as
a prominent form of verbal wit during the Spanish Golden Age and developed
distinctive genre features, including phonetic ambiguity, semantic duality, humor,
and social criticism.
