EOWetMet: Pan-Arctic Monthly 500 m Wetland Methane Flux Dataset (2015-2024)
Description
The EOWetMet Pan-Arctic Monthly 500 m Wetland Methane Flux Dataset provides monthly methane flux estimates across northern and Arctic wetlands from 2015 to 2024. The dataset forms part of the EOWetMet Community Database and was developed through the integration of eddy covariance (EC) methane flux observations, Earth Observation datasets, and environmental reanalysis products within a machine-learning-based methane upscaling framework.
Methane flux estimates were generated using a Random Forest regression model trained on Arctic and boreal wetland EC methane flux measurements and driven by environmental predictors derived from ERA5-Land, SMAP, and MODIS products. The resulting methane flux products were constrained using the Pan-Arctic Wetland Map (PAWM), a wetland inventory developed within the EOWetMet project, and compared against alternative wetland representations within a common modelling framework, including BAWLD, WAD2M, and MODIS IGBP.
This product provides spatially detailed monthly methane flux maps across the Pan-Arctic domain at approximately 500 m spatial resolution and serves as a community resource for studying methane dynamics, evaluating Earth system models, benchmarking methane inventories, supporting climate change research in northern wetland environments, and facilitating intercomparison of wetland methane products and modelling frameworks.
