Authors/Creators
Description
Abstract (English)
Japanese art education has developed through an ongoing dialogue between cultural tradition, curricular reform and new understandings of childhood. Within this process, Zoukei Asobi emerges as a distinctive proposal in the field of Zuga Kōsaku, shifting the focus of art education from technical reproduction to free exploration, sensory interaction and children’s creativity.
This article reviews the historical and curricular genealogy of Zoukei Asobi, from the educational transformations of the Meiji era to its incorporation into the Japanese official curriculum in 1977 and its subsequent development throughout primary education. The discussion addresses its pedagogical foundations, its relationship with Japanese tradition, the role of materials, the importance of autonomous play and the transformation of the teacher’s role. It also considers implementation tensions identified in Japanese literature, especially those related to teacher training, assessment and adaptation to different school ages.
The article argues that Zoukei Asobi constitutes an experiential, playful and meaningful form of art education, capable of broadening the understanding of art as experience, process and meaning-making.
