INNOVATION AND ENTERPRENEURSHIP IN JAPAN: JAPANESE BUSINESS PRESENCE IN UKRAINE

  • 1. ROR icon University of Helsinki

Description

Japan is often associated with giant corporations, lifetime employment, and hierarchical business structures. However, beneath this image lies another Japan - a country where small and medium-sized enterprises, SMEs, innovative entrepreneurs, and regional industrial clusters have played a crucial role in technological development and economic growth.

For Ukraine, especially before 2020, the Japanese experience offered valuable lessons. Ukraine possessed strong engineering traditions, highly educated human capital, and significant industrial potential, but often lacked effective links between research institutions, private business, and government innovation policy. Japanese companies operating in Ukraine represented practical examples of how technology transfer, management culture, and long-term investment could support modernization.
