English title: Rulers and Towns: The Press on the Visits of the Obrenović and Karađorđević Dynasties to Kraljevo, Čačak, and Gornji Milanovac 19th and Early 20th Century
The paper Rulers and Towns: The Press on the Visits of the Obrenović and Karađorđević Dynasties to Kraljevo, Čačak, and Gornji Milanovac (19th and Early 20th Century) analyzes official visits of Serbian rulers as artificial public ceremonies, political rituals, and media-mediated forms of dynastic legitimation.
The analysis focuses on Kraljevo, Čačak, and Gornji Milanovac as towns whose historical, local, and symbolic resources shaped the ways in which they were included in Serbia’s official representative culture. Their position depended not only on administrative and economic circumstances, but also on their ability to present local traditions as part of a broader state and dynastic symbolic order.
Taking the press as its main source, the paper shows that newspaper reports were not merely records of ceremonies, but also instruments for producing a desired image of the ruler, the people, and the local community. Through descriptions of processions, decorations, speeches, receptions, acclamations, and public emotions, the press shaped the image of loyalty, devotion, and unity among dynasty, state, and people.
Particular attention is devoted to the competitive relationship among Karanovac/Kraljevo, Čačak, and Gornji Milanovac on the “market of territorial capital.” The symbolism of Žiča and Studenica, Takovo, Brusnica, Gornja Crnuća, Vraćevšnica, and the Battle of Ljubić influenced the ways in which these towns sought their place within the hierarchy of official state representative culture.
The paper demonstrates that royal visits were not merely protocol events, but complex forms of symbolic politics. Through them, dynastic legitimacy, state authority, local loyalty, and the developmental ambitions of small towns in centralized nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Serbia were simultaneously affirmed.
