al-Battani: Catalogue of the Fixed Stars, Complete Critical Dataset and Reader

  • 1. Independent

Description

Work-level record for al-Battānī's fixed-star catalogue from the Opus Astronomicum / Kitāb al-Zīj. The current reader and dataset contain 485 numbered star rows across 47 Ptolemaic figures, with authoritative ecliptic longitude and latitude values, north/south signs, magnitudes, and modern Bayer/Flamsteed/common-name identifications. The documented Escorial-codex lacuna for Argo Navis, Hydra, and the beginning of Crater is shown explicitly.

The catalogue coordinate layer is complete. The Arabic/English description layer is substantial and source-collated but still intentionally marked as a collation layer: current data contain 451 Arabic descriptions and 398 English descriptions. The attached source ZIP includes TeX, CSV/TSV data, build scripts, and working notes; the Nallino source witness is included for auditability.

This record is a focused citable extract from the broader non-European mathematics manuscript corpus, concept DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20410957, and the main raw/provenance backstop, concept DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20393488.

Notes

Complete coordinate catalogue: 485 numbered star rows with longitude, latitude, N/S sign, magnitude, and modern identifications. Description collation layer currently includes 451 Arabic descriptions and 398 English descriptions; remaining description collation is explicitly documented rather than silently completed.
