Description
Education is a vital instrument for personal growth, social transformation, and nation-
building. While conventional education often emphasizes academic achievement and
vocational skills, the importance of moral and ethical development remains
underappreciated in modern curricula. Gandhian philosophy offers a comprehensive
framework for value-based education, emphasizing the holistic development of
individuals by integrating physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth. According to
Mahatma Gandhi, education should cultivate self-realization, moral integrity, empathy, and
social responsibility, enabling students to become ethically grounded, self-reliant, and
socially conscious citizens.
This paper explores the core principles of Gandhian value-based education, including
the cultivation of higher values, holistic child development, vocational and life-oriented
learning, self-realization through truth, and the promotion of Ahimsa (non-violence),
empathy, and ethical conduct. It highlights the role of teachers as moral exemplars, guiding
students not only academically but also in character formation. Gandhi’s emphasis on self-
confidence, independence, simple living, high thinking, and cultural awareness
reinforces the importance of nurturing responsible and compassionate individuals capable
of contributing meaningfully to society.
