The GenAI Motivation and Learning Buddy: A Generative AI Prompt Library for Educators and their Students

The GenAI Motivation and Learning Buddy is an Open Access AI-supported coaching resource that helps students use generative AI as a collaborative learning partner while completing academic tasks such as homework, assignments, presentations, and exam preparation. It provides prompt scripts students can copy into widely available AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Claude) to develop personalized strategies to support their motivation, engagement, and learning as they complete academic tasks. After copying a prompt script into a generative AI tool, students work through 8 self-paced steps that include: practical motivation, engagement and learning strategies, guided exercises, and reflection activities. By providing students with complete prompt scripts (rather than embedding the scripts in an AI Agent), the GenAI Buddy also serves a pedagogical purpose: it develops students’ prompt-writing skills and builds their capacity to engage with generative AI in agentic, purposeful, and self-directed ways. Thus, the GenAI Buddy supports both students’ immediate motivation and learning needs and their longer-term capacity to work effectively with AI as a collaborative partner in the learning process.
