Description
This paper examines the integration of smart automation and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in Nigeria's agro-processing sector to address chronic productivity gaps and enhance value addition. Through mixed-methods research involving case studies of 12 Nigerian agro-processing firms, IoT prototype development, and policy analysis, the paper identifies critical success factors for digital transformation. The findings demonstrate that appropriately scaled smart teachnologies can increase processing efficiency by 35-52%, reduce post-harvest losses by 40%, and improve product quality consistency by 28%. The paper presents a tiered implementation framework addressing technological, economic and policy dimensions, with particular emphasis on solutions adaptable to Nigeria's infrastructure constraints. It contributes to literature on appropriate technology adoption in emerging economies' industrial sectors.
