Description

Pimpla pyramis (Porter, 1970)

Coccygomimus pyramis Porter, 1970: 122. Holotype, female, Bolivia (IFML) (Fig. 6).

Diagnosis.

This species can be distinguished from the other Neotropical species of Pimpla by the combination of the following character states: 1) laterotergite V 3.8 × longer than wide (4.8 × in male) (Fig. 6 B); 2) metasoma black and shiny, with white apical bands on tergites I – VII, broadest on tergite I and progressively narrower posteriorly (Fig. 6 E); 3) mesosoma predominantly black (postscutellum white, scutellum sometimes with a subapical white band, and tegula black, slightly brownish apically) (Fig. 6 A); 4) legs reddish except coxae, trochanters and trochantelli darkish (Fig. 6 A); 5) wings hyaline weakly yellowish (Fig. 6 A); 6) malar space about 0.8–0.9 × the basal width of the mandible (0.5–0.6 × in male) (Fig. 6 C); 7) tergite II silky-shining, with fine but distinct microreticulation and sparse, shallow, inconspicuous medium-sized punctures (Fig. 6 E); 8) female with ovipositor cylindrical, dorsal valve weakly convex on tip (Fig. 6 D); 9) ovipositor sheath about 0.7 × as long as hind tibia.

Distribution.

Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuela (Yu et al. 2016).

Comments.

This species belongs to the P. albomarginata species group; see the comments under Pimpla aeola.
