The State Visit of King Charles III to the United States of America (2026): An Anatomy of Ceremonial Diplomacy and Soft Power through the Prism of Protocol

This working paper examines the state visit of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla to the United States of America (27–30 April 2026) as an object of protocol study. It analyses the visit day by day and interprets its core elements — reciprocity, invitation, military honours, precedence, gift exchange and commemorative rites — as a codified language of sovereignty, respect and ceremonial diplomacy.
The paper further examines the visit through the theory of soft power, comparing British royal protocol and American presidential protocol as two highly developed ceremonial systems. It is prepared as a qualitative case study grounded in official sources, media reporting and protocol scholarship.
