Description

Abstract. In recent years, the key geoeconomic trends observed in the Asia-
Pacific region have been shaped by interrelated processes such as state-led
regionalism and market-driven regionalization. The convergence of these two
approaches has laid the foundation for the expansion and deepening of regional
integration. Developing and least developed countries within the region have
emerged as some of the most active participants globally in adopting and
implementing the principles of sustainable development. Many governments in the
region support and strive to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs), including eradicating poverty, ending hunger, ensuring health and
well-being, and providing quality education.
Another significant megatrend in the region is the expansion of infrastructure
and connectivity, in which the role of governments has become increasingly
important. The European Union, the United States, and Asian countries within the
Indo-Pacific region are seeking to enhance connectivity in the fields of digital
technologies, transportation infrastructure, and energy. Projects such as China's
Belt and Road Initiative, Japan's Partnership for Quality Infrastructure, the EU's
Strategy for Connecting Europe and Asia, and the G7’s Build Back Better World
initiative exemplify the growing efforts by various states and coalitions to support
infrastructure development in the Indo-Pacific region.
At the current stage, the notion that the center of global economic and
political dynamics is shifting toward the Asia-Pacific region is increasingly being
substantiated through the emergence of two competing megaregional integration
projects: the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific
Partnership (CPTPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership
(RCEP). Owing to their vast scale, these integration frameworks have the
potential to fundamentally reshape the trade and economic landscape not only in
Asia but also globally.
