A Culture Collection of unialgal, indigenous Mediterranean macroalgae (germplasm) is housed at the Hellenic Agricultural Organization-DIMITRA (ELGO-DIMITRA), Fisheries Research Institute (INALE), in Nea Peramos, Kavala, Greece.
The biobank maintains over 70 unialgally isolated strains and species. By utilizing these genetic resources, the initiative seeks to protect marine ecosystems, generate economic opportunities, and supply raw materials for the food sector and other industries.
The facility includes advanced infrastructure for isolating and cultivating unialgal cultures of indigenous macroalgae. It supports rigorous phenotyping to identify strains with optimal growth and valuable biochemical properties, and develops technologies to enhance the cultivation of these elite strains in raceways and tanks.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101084180 (NOVAFOODIES, https://novafoodies.eu/).
