Description

Volume 4 of the Learning Unbound series places AI within the learning picture built by the earlier volumes, treating it as the newest and sharpest instance of the performance trap rather than a new question. Read through an augmentation-versus-atrophy lens, its single test is the learner's capacity when the tool is removed: fluency while assisted is not learning. The volume distinguishes assisted fluency from unaided capacity, develops a tutor-not-author way of using AI that keeps retrieval and reasoning with the learner, installs a verification habit that treats each AI answer as a claim to test, and identifies which learning tasks lose their desirable difficulty when offloaded. It argues that learning-to-learn matters more, not less, in this era, and presents a bounded version of the two-sigma personal-tutor claim, noting that unscaffolded use can harm learning. It defers AI-method depth to the Augmented Mind series and leads into the systems view of Volume 5.
