Description

Volume 1 of the Learning Unbound series turns the lens of Volume 0 into concrete cognitive science. Organised around the single principle of desirable difficulties (Bjork), it explains why conditions that make practice harder and slower lower immediate performance yet build more durable, transferable learning. The volume develops the high-leverage techniques the evidence supports: retrieval practice and the testing effect, spaced practice and why the forgetting interval matters, interleaving and the discrimination it trains, and elaboration and self-explanation, set against the weaker strategies of rereading and highlighting. A chapter on cognitive load marks the boundary where difficulty stops being desirable, including expertise reversal and worked examples. Each technique is grounded in the storage-strength versus retrieval-strength account of memory. Written for any serious learner, the volume converts Volume 0's principles into a usable toolkit and prepares for the metacognition of Volume 2.
