Description

In this work, we show that the depth-dependent behaviour of bridgmanite deformation leads to the development of strain-induced seismic (anisotropic) discontinuities in the mid-mantle around high-stress regions. The depth of the anisotropic discontinuity begins to emerge near ~1000 km depth, and deepens depending on the extent of the accumulated deformation. As such, it broadly matches the depth distribution of some of the observed mid-mantle reflectors and scatterers beneath subduction zones. Under the folder mantle_models/, you will find the repository of the lower mantle models (i.e., elastic tensor at each point in 2D space) corresponding to the penetrating slab model (Figure 2), shallowly stagnant slab model (Supplementary Figure 2), and penetrating slab model but for the faster bridgmanite slip transition mechanism (Supplementary Figure 7). In synthetic_waveforms/, you will find the synthetic seismograms in SAC format. Finally, the folder VPSC_input_files/ contains the relevant input parameters needed to run the VPSC simulations for bridgmanite deformation.
