CHOLECYSTECTOMY VERSUS CENTRAL OBESITY OR INSULIN RESISTANCE IN RELATION TO THE RISK OF NONALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE (NAFLD)
Authors/Creators
Description
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a metabolic disorder strongly associated with
central obesity and insulin resistance (IR). Recently, cholecystectomy has also been
suggested as a potential risk factor for NAFLD due to alterations in bile acid metabolism
and lipid homeostasis. However, its independent contribution compared with well
established drivers such as visceral obesity and insulin resistance remains controversial.
This review summarizes current evidence on the relative roles of cholecystectomy, central
obesity, and insulin resistance in the development of NAFLD.
