Strategy is a story we tell about leverage, and the physical world honors none of it; the parts that ignore you will decide the outcome the parts you manage cannot.

A plan is a claim about leverage, and the physical world was not consulted in drafting it. Some parts of any system can be negotiated with, managed, persuaded; others simply are, and they decide outcomes regardless of how good the strategy is. The book argues for a hard humility: do the work, manage what answers to management, and never mistake the parts that ignore you for parts you can command.
