Creativity across Germanic Languages: Entropy and Surprise in the Translation of Nordic Noir
Description
This computational study quantifies translator creativity through entropy and surprisal analysis of Nordic noir translations across Germanic languages. By comparing source texts, human translations, and machine translation output using multiple Large Language Models, the paper provides empirical evidence for how typological distance and translation mode shape creative choices in literary translation.
