Description

PLATE 2. Disarticulated specimens of Jagtithyris suessi (Bosquet, 1859), the type genus of the family Jagtithyrididae Simon & Mottequin, fam. nov., collected from strata dated as late Maastrichtian (Maastricht Formation, Belemnitella junior Zone) in the Maastricht area, southern Limburg, The Netherlands. Fig. 1. Specimen NHMM 2017 015. 1a: Ventral valve in dorsal view showing smooth internal valve surface, smooth sessile pedicle collar and protruding deltidial plates. Left tooth broken. 1b: Detailed view of foramen with smooth sessile pedicle collar, disjunct deltidial plates and anteriorly divergent dental plates. Concave furrow of palintrope clearly visible. 1c: detailed oblique anterior view illustrating that pedicle collar is slightly steplike. 1d: Dorsal valve in ventral view (slightly enlarged). The long and blade-like septum is partially damaged. The myophore with the discrete cardinal process (Cp) is visible. 1e: Detailed view of posterior part of dorsal valve with poorly developed cardinal process (Cp). Fig. 2. Specimen NHMM 2017 014. 2a: Dorsal valve in ventral view. Strong, thick inner socket ridges well preserved. Septum intact, showing blade-like aspect in ventral view. 2b: Detailed view of inner socket ridges, myophore bearing small cardinal process and small thin crural plates (p). From the posterior part of the septum two weak obsolete ridges join base of crural plates (arrow). 2c: Oblique lateral view showing cockscomb septum with pointed anterior extremity and strongly concave anterior part. 2d: Oblique anterior view of dorsal valve with thin, blade-like septum. Crural plates clearly visible. 2e: Lateral view of septum with cockscomb outline and posterior concavity well visible. 2f: detailed view of posterior part of valve in anterior oblique view. 2g: Detailed view of socket and crural plate (p). 2h: Detailed oblique view of posterior part of dorsal valve. Myophore and cardinal process (Cp) visible and slightly increased thickness of posterior base of septum (an important character) pointed out.
