Linen Mounting in the Conservation of Large-Format Posters and Maps: Current Criteria for a Historical Technique

Description
Linen mounting has been widely used to stabilize large-format posters and maps, particularly for handling, transport, and display. In contemporary conservation practice, its application is more selective due to concerns regarding reversibility and long-term material behaviour.
This study examines linen mounting as a multilayer system composed of paper, adhesive, intermediate support, and textile backing. The interaction between these materials is governed by their hygroscopic and mechanical properties, including the anisotropic expansion of paper, the moisture sensitivity of starch-based adhesives, and the shrinkage of textiles during drying.
The results highlight that the success of linen mounting depends primarily on the control of differential movements and internal stresses during humidification and drying. Key factors include fiber orientation, moisture management, and controlled drying conditions.
When applied under appropriate technical criteria, linen mounting remains a valid conservation method for selected large-format graphic documents.
