Tra fotografia e segno: la trascrizione informatizzata dei registri storici Alinari

ABSTRACT (ITALIANO)
Il progetto di ricerca è incentrato sulla valorizzazione dei registri storici Alinari pertinenti il fondo Patronato: si tratta di due registri, ordinati rispettivamente in ordine cronologico e alfabetico, prodotti dalla storica società fotografica Fratelli Alinari per documentare la produzione di negativi e positivi su commissione (1893-2019).
Al fine di poter ricollegare i negativi fotografici alle informazioni manoscritte, si è resa necessaria una trascrizione informatizzata dei registri attraverso un procedimento HTR; per tale procedura è stata utilizzata la piattaforma Transkribus. Data l'eterogeneità della tipologia di grafie e l'ampiezza dell'arco cronologico, sono stati sperimentati alcuni modelli per il recognition text a partire da due periodi temporali: quello relativo ad una scrittura più calligrafica, tipica della fine del XIX sec./inizio XX, e quello relativo ad una grafia più confusa e imprecisa, post Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Per l'organizzazione del layout è stato necessario realizzare un table model dato che risultava totalmente assente nella lista dei modelli presenti all'interno del programma. Il risultato è stato parzialmente migrato su Excel e alla trascrizione delle singole commissioni sono state affiancate manualmente le stringhe identificative delle immagini delle lastre. L'importanza del progetto risulta fondamentale considerati: la fragilità dei manoscritti cartacei; la temporanea non accessibilità del materiale Alinari; la praticità nel reperimento delle informazioni necessarie; la possibilità di una pubblicazione dell'intero inventario sul sito della Fondazione; ed infine per la fattiva possibilità di estendere la trascrizione informatizzata agli altri registri prodotti dalla stessa
società.

ABSTRACT (ENGLISH)
Between photography and sign: the computerized transcription of Alinari historical registers. The research project focuses on enhancing the historical Alinari registers pertaining to the Patronato collection: these are two registers, arranged chronologically and alphabetically respectively, produced by the historic photographic company Fratelli Alinari to document the production of commissioned negatives and positives (1893-2019). In order to connect the photographic negatives to the manuscript information, a computerized transcription of the registers was necessary using an HTR process; the Transkribus platform was used to document this process.
Given the heterogeneity of the handwriting typologies and the breadth of the chronological span, several models for text recognition were tested starting from two time periods: one relating to a more calligraphic handwriting, typical of the late 19th/early 20th century, and one relating to a more confused and imprecise handwriting, after Second World War. To organize the layout, it was necessary to create a table model, as it was completely absent from the list of templates available within the program. The result was partially migrated to Excel, and the transcription of the individual commissions was accompanied by the image identification strings of the final ones. The importance of the project was fundamentally considered: the fragility of the paper manuscripts; the temporary inaccessibility of the Alinari material; the ease of finding the necessary information; the possibility of publishing the entire inventory on the Foundation's website; and finally, the practical possibility of extending the computerized transcription to the other registers produced by the same company.
