EXPLORING DIGITAL LONELINESS: THE PARADOX OF CONNECTIVITE WITHOUT SOCIAL INTERACTION
Description
This paper investigates the phenomenon of digital loneliness, defined as a subjective sense of isolation experienced despite frequent online interaction. Focusing on rural communities, it analyzes how limited online social infrastructure, combined with increased dependence on digital communication, reshapes patterns of human interaction. The study argues that while digital platforms expand informational access, they often fail to provide the emotional depth and authenticity inherent in face-to-face relationships. Particular attention is given to younger populations, who are more susceptible to passive digital consumption and reduced real-life engagement. Drawing on recent psychological and sociological perspectives, the paper demonstrates that digital connectivity may inadvertently erode traditional communal ties, intensifying feelings of detachment. The findings highlight the need to reconsider the role of technology in fostering genuine social cohesion in rural contexts.
