Exercise: Exploring and working with Input-Output Tables. Time use and GHG emissions footprints for the Global North and Global South (2010)

  • 1. EDMO icon Autonomous University of Barcelona, Institute of Environmental Science and Technology

Description

This class exercise presents an aggregated version of an existing Input-Output data base (Exiobase 3.8) with only 6 sectors and 2 regions (Global North and Global South) for the year 2010. The aim is to calculate the working hours and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions embodied in the final consumption of both regions. It includes a sheet with guidelines for carrying out the calculations and a solutions sheet.

The learning goals are:

  • to understand the structure of the dataset and the calculations involved in consumption-based footprinting. The database has been aggregated to make it possible to work easily with Excel and to have a general overview of the structure of the data.
  • to compare this approach to the end-use matrix tool from the MuSIASEM framework.
  • to reflect on the implications of the results for social and environmental sustainability.
