Description
In recent years, Chile has experienced significant growth in cherry production. The sustained expansion of cultivated area, export volumes, and export values reflects this trend. China has consolidated its position as the primary destination for Chilean cherries, consistently accounting for more than 90% of total exports each season. This high level of concentration is largely explained by the premium prices paid by Chinese consumers, particularly during the Chinese New Year, given the fruit’s strong cultural significance. Chilean producers remain optimistic, expecting prices to remain high and production to continue expanding in the short term. In some industry discussions, it has been suggested that Chile would struggle to meet Chinese demand even if the planted area of cherry orchards were to double. At the same time, stakeholders have raised concerns about the risks associated with reliance on a single export market, including potential exposure to retaliatory measures in the event of diplomatic tensions. Current challenges appear to stem less from demand constraints and more from supply-side limitations, as signs are emerging that agro-industrial development in Chile may be reaching its limits, mainly due to water scarcity and labor shortages.
