Description

Subgenus Carinotiphia subgen. nov.

Type species. Tiphia (Carinotiphia) notialis sp. nov.

Diagnosis. Mandible without preapical denticle or medial transverse groove, lower frons with dense punctures (Figs 3, 13, 23), tegula smooth, T1 anteriorly with transverse carina (Figs 8, 18, 28); in male, pronotal antero-dorsal carina distinct, mesopleuron with anteriorly vertical carina (ALLEN 1975, HAN et al. 2021, HANIMA et al. 2022). This subgenus is similar to the genus Cyanotiphia Cameron, 1907 in the transverse carina of T1, but it can be distinguished from the latter by these characters: pronotum laterally without dense punctures (Figs 5, 15, 25), disc of propodeum laterally without complete and longitudinal carina running from anterior to posterior margin (Figs 6, 16, 26) and mid tibia with one spur apically (FENG et al. 2025).

Etymology. The subgeneric name Carinotiphia is derived from two Latin words: carina (= carina, keel) + Tiphia (the generic name), referring to the subgeneric diagnostic feature, anteriorly transverse keel on T1. The gender is feminine.

Species included. There are eight species in this subgenus: T. (C.) bituberculata Yildirim & Boni Bartalucci, 2009, T. (C.) chareshi Hanima & Girish Kumar, 2022, T. (C.) coimbatorea Allen, 1975, T. (C.) exacta Nurse, 1903, T. (C.) hispanica Dusmet, 1930, T. (C.) nigriseta sp. nov., T. (C.) notialis sp. nov., and T. (C.) transversisulcata sp. nov. (NURSE 1903, DUSMET 1930, ALLEN 1975, YILDIRIM & BONI BARTALUCCI 2009, HANIMA et al. 2022).

Distribution (Fig. 1). Based on existing literature and specimens, the subgenus Carinotiphia occurs in China, India, Spain, Sri Lanka, and Turkey, which is widely distributed across both the Oriental and Palaearctic Regions (DUSMET 1930, YILDIRIM & BONI BARTALUCCI 2009, HANIMA et al. 2022). However, the documented literature and specimens remain limited. This indicates considerable taxonomic research gaps regarding this subgenus. Meanwhile, specific habitat conditions and biological characteristics of the subgenus Carinotiphia have yet to be discovered. Further research on this subgenus may allow exploration of its evolution and the formation mechanisms of its transverse ridges through morphological differences of T1.

Taxonomy. In view of the nominotypical species of the subgenus Punctotiphia having been transferred to the genus Cyanotiphia, Punctotiphia became a junior synonym of the latter (FENG et al. 2025). Because three species still remain in Punctotiphia, we decide to erect a new subgenus Carinotiphia and transfer the three species to the new subgenus (HANIMA et al. 2022). In line with the subgeneric diagnostic features, two Palaearctic species of the nominotypical subgenus Tiphia, namely, Tiphia (Tiphia) bituberculata Yildirim & Boni Bartalucci, 2009 and T. (T.) hispanica Dusmet, 1930, are also transferred to the subgenus Carinotiphia (DUSMET 1930, YILDIRIM & BONI BARTALUCCI 2009).
