Figure 1. Gametocytes of Haemoproteus balearicae (lineage hBAREGI210) from the blood of grey crowned crane Balearica regulorum: (a)–(i) – macrogametocytes, (j)–(o) – microgametocytes. Note: the slender form and markedly irregular gametocyte outlines, with numerous deep indentations providing various lobular-like appearances to the parasites (d, g, l–n). Long simple arrows – parasite nuclei; simple arrowheads - pigment granules; simple wide long arrows – indentations; short simple arrows – vacuoles. Giemsastained thin blood films. Scale bar = 10 µm.
