The colouring lanes and the free energy principle were conceived of roughly at the same time – and both share a common theoretical commitment and perspective. This perspective is inherently enactive.
From the perspective of the free energy principle, much of the heavy lifting in the neurosciences has been done by its corollary active inference. A special instance of active inference is active vision; namely, the act of constructing the perceptual scene – in the sense of "in the eye of the beholder". This is exactly what colouring lanes brings to the table: namely, a set of opportunities—or affordances—to construct and reify our internal explanations for the causes of our sensorium.
In this sense, colouring lanes reflects a paradigm shift at the beginning of this century. It turns on its head an ‘outside-in’ view of perception, to render perception an ‘inside-out’ process – a process by which we create explanations, hypotheses or internal models of what could have caused our visual impressions.
We then act upon the world to test these hypotheses. This action can be as simple as ‘looking over there’ or, in the current setting, realising internal constructs by, literally, lending the world a colour and depth. In this sense, colouring lanes is a beautiful example—and opportunity for—sentient behaviour. An unparalleled opportunity to realise our aesthetic affordances.
