Nihilistic Violence Aesthetics in Public Online Communication: A Conceptual Framework for Interpreting Hybridized Violent Signaling A Research-Informed White Paper for Researchers, Practitioners, and Policy Audiences

Description

This research-informed white paper introduces the Aesthetic-to-Risk Framework of Nihilistic Violence Aesthetics (ART-NVA), a conceptual framework for interpreting how nihilistic violent meaning may be communicated in public online spaces through memes, irony, dehumanizing language, collapse-oriented imagery, aestheticized violence, and warning-behavior-adjacent cues.

The paper is intended for researchers, practitioners, and policy audiences working in areas such as targeted violence prevention, threat assessment, school safety, behavioral intervention, public safety, human services, and online extremism research. ART-NVA is designed to support conceptual clarity, practitioner training, and future empirical research on hybridized violent signaling in public online communication.

The framework identifies five conceptual dimensions: meaning collapse, anti-human or dehumanizing orientation, aesthetic packaging of violence, irony and ambiguity as communicative shields, and proximity to warning-behavior signaling. It also proposes three communication types: performative nihilistic transgression, aestheticized anti-human violence, and escalatory nihilistic signaling.

This white paper does not present ART-NVA as a validated assessment instrument, diagnostic tool, intelligence product, or standalone risk-classification model. It should not be used to identify extremists, classify groups, predict violence, or assess individual risk. Its purpose is to provide a research-informed vocabulary for discussing ambiguous public online content and to support future empirical testing, ethical refinement, and prevention-oriented scholarship.
