Using the latest data to model wild boar abundance at high spatial resolution

Description

Building on a similar analysis conducted in 2024, we present updated estimates of wild boar (Sus scrofa) distribution and abundance in the absence of African Swine Fever (ASF). These estimates draw on the most recent density and occurrence data available for Europe. To calibrate model outputs into density values, we used the latest predictions of relative abundance and local wild boar densities (individuals per km²) considered reliable within the European Observatory of Wildlife (EOW), supplemented by recent literature (2015 onwards). This expanded dataset increases the number of ASF-free study sites from 77 to 104. Our findings highlight the value of the observatory approach—using study areas with robust, harmonized density estimates—to generate high quality information for epidemiological assessment. The updated model results remain consistent with earlier outputs.
