Sustainability and expansion of Dutch Diamond Open Access through collaboration and resource sharing

The Dutch project Infrastructures for Diamond Open Access is set up by the university library consortium UKB and plans to set up a high-quality, flexible and accessible national publication infrastructure that can be made available to all university presses, research institutes, and other academic organisations that wish to develop and publish their own articles, journals and 
(text)books. By this we aim at efficiency and a focused strategy for Diamond OA journals and publishers. For instance, we intend to share infrastructure costs and workforce, increase the quality of services for diamond open access, and contribute to a change in publication culture to guarantee academic sovereignty.

This new Dutch Diamond OA infrastructure builds upon already existing academic library-led publication infrastructures, the so-called Netherlands University Presses (NUPs), and Openjournals. All of these have demonstrated their dedication to open science principles by using technology based on open-source software, having a community-based governance and adherence to diamond open access models and FAIR data principles.

The publication infrastructure is supplemented with a shared and flexible service offer focused on the production side of publishing, such as archiving and preservation, indexing and reporting on content usage. In a later stage of the project we’ll work towards expanding support by shared editorial services, further reducing operational costs.

The presentation will give insight into the timeline and different work packages involved and into our collaboration partners on the European (DIAMAS, CRAFT-OA) and national level (Expertise Centre Diamond OA, NUPs, SURF).
