TECUAN DANZA COMEDIA examines the grotesque parodies of the tiger (jaguar) hunt performed by comic old hunters, a festive theatrical-dance tradition that identifies the southern region of Mexico and functions as a powerful symbol of regional identity. The book analyzes how these popular performances also provide insight into the historical construction of Mexican identity, particularly during the nineteenth century after Independence.

Across various communities in the center-south of Mexico and even in El Salvador, similar variants are performed under different names: tecuanis, tlacololeros, tlaminques, lobitos, chilolos, tejorones, and the dance of the tiger and the deer. Despite regional differences, these festive comedies share structural, symbolic, linguistic, and performative elements, suggesting that they derive from a lost original script written in the nineteenth century by a Nahuatl-speaking author.

The study identifies forty shared characteristics among these traditions, including comic elderly hunters, parallel dance formations, humorous masks and costumes, dialogues in a hybrid Nahuatl-Spanish language, the presence of hunting dogs, the use of an old flintlock shotgun, charro-style wide-brimmed hats, the figure of a landowner who orders the hunt, doctors who mock-heal wounded hunters, the use of nineteenth-century coins (reales), and the incorporation of Indigenous and mestizo cultural elements.

Performed in more than 170 patron-saint festivals, these festive dance-comedies are secular in tone yet embedded in popular religiosity. They parody nineteenth-century rural life, landowners, and social hierarchies, functioning as community identity markers and socio-political release valves. The book argues that the recurring elements — including the flintlock shotgun, the hybrid “Nahuañol” language, the hunting narrative, and the material culture represented — demonstrate that the traditional tiger dance-comedy in Mexico emerged in the nineteenth century.
