Beyond Participation: Citizen Science, Policy Impact and Economic Value
Authors/Creators
Description
In this book, we illustrate how citizen science efforts create policy and economic impact – on a regional, national and international level. The impact stories showcase what can be achieved when municipalities, ministries, (inter-)national funding bodies, and the private sector invest in citizen science, and how this is beneficial for European societies.
This book focuses on the tangible effects that citizen science has at various levels, from a global scale to local initiatives, on shaping policies and creating economic value. Building on the success of the previous collection, which showcased 12 stories across Europe illustrating the power of collective action and inclusivity at the local level, this publication continues our mission to highlight how citizen science is an important vehicle for driving change and innovation.
Citizen science is a term that has evolved over time, with many definitions, nuances, and applications emerging from its practice. While definitions may vary, at its core, citizen science represents meaningful engagement in authentic scientific work. This involvement is not only important for the individuals who contribute to it, but also for advancing scientific knowledge and addressing societal challenges. It is this collaborative and participatory nature of citizen science that we seek to highlight and the ways in which citizens, researchers, policymakers and the private sector come together to address pressing global and local issues.
This book begins by examining citizen science from both the EU and global perspectives. Exemplary, we explore the role of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), followed by the OECD’s global vision. At the national and regional levels, we delve into the benefits that citizen science offers to individuals and institutions, highlighting how it enhances problem diagnosis and provides access to previously inaccessible information, which in turn enables more informed policy decisions. Shifting our focus to impactful grassroots initiatives, we showcase the significant influence of smaller-scale projects. From conserving remarkable trees and advocating for legislative changes to protecting vital ecosystems and cultural heritage, community-driven action has the power to create meaningful and lasting change.
In addition to its impact on policy and society, citizen science is increasingly intersecting with the economy. Through concrete examples, we explore how businesses are harnessing citizen science services and technologies to drive innovation, diversify their offerings, and stimulate growth. Citizen science is emerging not only as a catalyst for societal change but also as a business model that fosters entrepreneurial ventures and supports economic development.
As you delve into these pages, we hope you find inspiration in the stories shared here. From local initiatives to large-scale policy change, citizen science is proving to be an indispensable driver of progress. Participation creates impact, advancing scientific knowledge that enables evidence-based policies and economic value for the benefit of society.
