Geleneksel Çanakkale Seramiklerinin Yorumlanması İle Oluşturulan Güncel Sanat Seramikleri

Çanakkale city (Türkiye), due to its strategic location, has been home to many civilizations throughout history, making it an attractive city and a region sought after by many. In Çanakkale city, the Period of Neolithic (Karaağaçtepe region, Hamaylıtarla region, Gökçeada ısland), Period of Chalcolithic (Kumtepe region, Beşik-Sivritepe Gülpınar region), ın the Bronze Age (Troya city, Kumtepe region, Hanay Tepe region, Beşiktepe region, Larissa region, Tuzla region, Külahlı region, Çan region, Biga region, Bayramiç region, Yenice region) settlement traces can be seen. The city is home to ancient cities founded by the Milesians, Aeolians, and Colophonians. The Çanakkale region has been ruled by Lydia, Persia, Greece, Rome, the Ottoman Empire, and finally the Republic of Turkey. The civilizations that lived in Çanakkale city left their mark on places such as Parion, Priapos, Sestos, Assos, Dardanos, Hamaksitos, and Lampsakos. Throughout history, the city of Çanakkale has witnessed many battles. Control of the Dardanelles Strait came under Turkish rule during the Ottoman Empire, following the conquest of Gallipoli Castle by Suleyman Pasha (army commander of the Ottoman Empire) in 1354. The Turkish military crowned this victory with its heroism during World War I, writing its name in history as “Çanakkale Geçilmez” (Çanakkale is impassable). With this sea victory, Çanakkale remained an ancient Turkish city and will continue to do so forever. The civilizations that have passed through Çanakkale have left an important cultural heritage for humanity. Thanks to this, Çanakkale has become an open-air museum on the stage of history. Among these cultural legacies, the most important are the Çanakkale ceramics, which bear witness to history. Çanakkale ceramics, which brought great innovations to Turkish ceramic art in terms of both form, style, and pattern, and color, have almost completely ceased production today. Preserving that Çanakkale of ceramics and ensuring they are not forgotten by presenting them on various platforms (symposia, panels, exhibitions, etc.) should be among the duties of everyone with historical awareness.

The scope of this study covers the form and decorative features of Çanakkale ceramics, and it aims to interpret these forms and decorations and to conduct contemporary research to preserve the cultural heritage of Çanakkale ceramics and pass it on to future generations. The methodology of this study consists of researching the general characteristics of Çanakkale ceramics in light of archaeological data and examining the works of several artists who have interpreted Çanakkale ceramics and created contemporary designs that carry the cultural heritage into the present day. Due to the broad scope of the subject, the study is limited to the artists mentioned, including İsmail Bütün, Adil Can Güven, Erdinç Bakla, Mustafa Tunçalp, Onur Öztürk, Ayhan Taşkıran, Esra Nurten Gül, Burak Çiftçi, Seyfullah Büyükçapar, Ayşe Künelgin, Ergün Arda, and Nurettin Gülaçtı. The findings show that Çanakkale ceramics are a source of new designs and that artists reflect cultural heritage in their new designs without straying from the essence of Çanakkale ceramics.
