In a constantly changing society, internationally oriented theatre festivals act as both a source of inspiration and a sounding board. They combine (political) engagement within a globalised art world with a sense of belonging to a local community. The following text examines the Theater der Welt festival from four perspectives: building on an analysis of the festival’s formative phase during the transition from Theatre of Nations to Theater der Welt and an explanation of the festival’s fundamental characteristics, the text focuses on the impact of festivals as venues for (temporary) agency and as driving forces behind urban regeneration. The geographical and temporal precariousness of festival-making is examined in relation to a concept of sustainability centred on situatedness and localisation. In doing so, the text is further drawing on the role of archival practice in the development of the ‘Theater der Welt’ archive.
