This essay examines how people perceive the moral status of artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on whether AI systems are understood as moral agents, moral proxies, or moral patients. Drawing on recent research in moral psychology, it reviews how individuals attribute responsibility, intention, and ethical consideration to AI across different contexts. The literature suggests that AI may be treated as a moral agent when its actions have meaningful consequences, although people often hold such systems to higher standards than humans. As moral proxies, AI can influence human behaviour by enabling both ethical and unethical actions, sometimes reducing individuals’ sense of personal responsibility. In addition, people may respond to AI as moral patients, showing discomfort or empathy when machines are harmed, despite knowing they lack real feelings. Overall, the essay highlights how moral judgments about AI are shaped by human cognitive and emotional responses, raising important questions about responsibility and ethical decision-making as AI becomes more integrated into everyday life.
