How the Kente Registry Validates Weavers and Cloths: A Scholarly Look at a Modern Authentication Workflow

Description

The Kente Registry is an independent Ghanaian initiative dedicated to authenticating the weavers and the cloths that sustain one of West Africa's most storied textile traditions. It exists because Kente is increasingly imitated, mass-printed and mislabelled in global markets, and because the livelihoods, knowledge and cultural authority of the weaving communities themselves deserve a system of record that is rigorous, transparent and theirs.

This technical note sets out, in scholarly detail, how the Registry actually performs that authentication. It describes the three pathways through which a record enters the system — Master Weaver Profile, Design Registration and Cloth Authentication — and walks through the validation pipeline that each submission travels: intake, evidence review, peer corroboration with community elders and master weavers, panel decision, issuance of a unique Kente Registry identifier (KR-…), and, where applicable, a certificate of authenticity for the cloth. It also situates the workflow within Ghana's geographical-indication framework and the six GI-recognised weaving communities of the Ashanti and Volta Regions.

The note is intended for researchers, cultural institutions, policymakers, journalists and the weaving community itself. It is deposited on Zenodo as a citable methodology of record so that the Registry's practices can be examined, referenced and built upon by others. The always-current, web-native version of this methodology is maintained at https://kenteregistry.org/how-we-validate/, of which this document is a versioned snapshot.
