Description

This dataset contains georeferenced transcriptions of four editions of early modern travel manuals published by Francesco Scoto (1650, two editions from 1675, and 1700). These manuals provide structured descriptions of long-distance routes across the Italian Peninsula and adjacent regions.

The dataset is composed of four CSV tables, each representing one edition. Each row corresponds to a single itinerary entry, including original place names, route descriptions, distances, and additional contextual information. Locational entries were geocoded using the GeoNames gazetteer and linked via persistent identifiers.

Across the four editions, the dataset contains 2,597 total rows, of which 1,773 represent geocodable location entries. A total of 1,599 locations (90.2%) were successfully assigned GeoNames identifiers and coordinates. Unresolved locations are preserved without coordinates to maintain completeness and transparency.

The dataset enables reconstruction and comparison of early modern route networks, analysis of spatial connectivity, and integration with other historical or GIS-based datasets. It is designed for reuse in HGIS, digital humanities, travel history, and network analysis.
