Description
Since its release in 2013, The Plant List (TPL) version 1.1 has not been updated, while botanical taxonomy has continued to advance rapidly.
In May 2012, World Flora Online (WFO, https://www.worldfloraonline.org) was initiated as a successor initiative in pursuit of Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD): An online Flora of all known plants. The "taxonomic backbone" of that Flora is a consensus-based list of accepted plant names and their synonyms, for which TPL 1.1 served as the first base. Sustained international collaboration in WFO provides the editorial network required to maintain an up-to-date global checklist. For this reason, TPL has been superseded by the World Flora Online Plant List (https://wfoplantlist.org/), which has been updated on a biannual basis since May 2018.
Given that TPL is a static dataset and no longer reflects current taxonomic knowledge, the interactive website has been retired. In order to ensure long-term accessibility and reproducibility, the complete TPL database (version 1.1) is here made available as an archival dataset.
Users are strongly encouraged to consult World Flora Online for up-to-date nomenclatural and taxonomic information.
