Stress Input as the Perpetual Fuel of a Self-Sustaining Neurodegenerative Loop: The Self-Protection Paradox and the Dissolution of Memory Writing

Description

Abstract

Chronic stress is recognized as a risk factor for cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease, yet its role is often viewed as one contributor among many. Through a novel conceptual synthesis arising from a reflective human–AI dialogue, this paper presents a unified, self-contained model: chronic stress alone can initiate and autonomously perpetuate a neurodegenerative cascade. The model posits that the brain’s own survival machinery—designed to protect the organism—paradoxically creates a closed degenerative loop by remodeling the prefrontal cortex (PFC), hippocampus, and amygdala, and by driving the accumulation of amyloid-β and hyperphosphorylated tau. The core insight is that this loop sustains itself on a single input: stress. Once internalized by pathology, the stress input becomes endogenous, making degeneration a “perpetual motion machine.” The paper introduces the phrase “the brain keeps itself safe, not you safe” as a heuristic anchor for the disjunction between organic survival and the continuity of the self. This framework suggests that stress reduction is not merely palliative but the singular therapeutic imperative to interrupt the loop before it locks shut. The synthesis is offered as a testable conceptual model and a compassionate explanatory tool for patients, clinicians, and researchers.
