Welcome Words

It was our great pleasure to host the 8th edition of the Energy Transition Research & Innovation Conference (ETRI 2025), organised by the Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation (RCGI) at the University of São Paulo, with the collaboration of the Offshore Technology Innovation Centre (OTIC).

This edition held particular significance as it marked the 10th anniversary of RCGI—a centre established in 2015 with the mission of advancing science and innovation to address the challenges of decarbonisation. Over the past decade, RCGI has consolidated its position as one of Brazil’s leading research initiatives in energy transition, bringing together a large and diverse community of researchers and projects.

ETRI 2025 stood out for the scale and quality of its scientific programme. The conference brought together more than 800 participants and received over 300 scientific submissions, reflecting the growing relevance of the event within the research and innovation ecosystem. A key highlight was the strong academic contribution: alongside the work developed within RCGI and OTIC, approximately 40% of the accepted papers were authored by external researchers, reinforcing ETRI’s openness and its role as a platform for broader scientific exchange.

The scientific programme covered a wide range of strategic themes central to the energy transition. These included decarbonisation pathways for industry, transport, and the power sector; hydrogen and its value chains; bioenergy and sustainable fuels; carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS); and the application of artificial intelligence and digital technologies to sustainability challenges. The scientific sessions showcased cutting-edge research and fostered interdisciplinary dialogue among academia, industry, and policymakers.

A key highlight of this edition was the participation of OTIC, which joined ETRI 2025 to expand the scope of the conference towards the “offshore of tomorrow.” This contribution brought forward cutting-edge research on New Processes and Operations; Low Carbon Power; Digital Technology; Novel Materials and Nanotechnology; and HSE & Circular Economy, reinforcing the importance of offshore systems in the future energy landscape.

ETRI 2025 was also held in conjunction with the University of São Paulo’s Pre-COP initiative, creating an important space for reflection on expectations surrounding COP30. These discussions addressed the contributions of USP to climate action, presented its research centres, and explored some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity, particularly in relation to decarbonisation and the energy transition.

In addition, the conference was connected to the broader São Paulo + Verde agenda, promoted by the Government of the State and the City of São Paulo, further strengthening the dialogue between science, public policy, and society.

We also acknowledge and thank the ETRI 2025 sponsors, Petronas and Hyundai, for their active engagement in panels, discussions, and presentations, including keynote contributions. Their involvement further enriched the programme and fostered closer interaction between industry and academia. The post-event visit to the Hyundai factory, offered as part of this collaboration, was particularly well received by participants.

This Book of Abstracts reflects the diversity, quality, and impact of the research presented at ETRI 2025. It stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of researchers, institutions, and industry partners committed to advancing knowledge and solutions for a low-carbon future.

We trust that the exchanges and partnerships fostered during ETRI 2025 will continue to contribute to shaping pathways towards a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive energy transition.
