Description
This deposit contains the monograph "KIAMU - Archipel de Lamu (Kenya)" authored by Dr. Mathieu Roy. It provides a comprehensive linguistic description of Kiamu, a northern Swahili dialect that, alongside the Mombasa dialects, served as one of the linguistic foundations for the development of classical Swahili literature between the 18th and 19th centuries.
Based on fieldwork conducted in 2005, this book presents a detailed phonetic, phonological, and morphological state-of-the-art analysis of the dialect. The linguistic study is grounded in a dual corpus: everyday spoken utterances and classical poetry. It includes an in-depth analysis of the first 131 stanzas of an utenzi poem composed by the Lamu poet, Sheikh Mahmud Ahmed Abdull ibn Kadir (widely known as Ustadh Mahmoud Mau).
Originally presented as a master's research thesis, this work not only offers a rigorous structural linguistic description but also constitutes an initial approach to the classical metrics of Swahili poetry, initiating the descriptive elements of the utenzi genre.
