Description

This repository contains the NSSL (National Severe Storms Laboratory) fork of the MPAS-Atmosphere model version 8.0.1, configured for convection-permitting regional ensemble forecasting within the NOAA/NSSL Warn-on-Forecast System (WoFS) framework.

This code was used in the following study:
Ha, S., and Coauthors, 2026: Advancing storm-scale ensemble data assimilation with the regional Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS). Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems (JAMES), submitted.

Key features include:
- Regional (limited-area) MPAS-Atmosphere configuration at 3-km horizontal grid spacing
- Convection-permitting physics suite optimized for storm-scale prediction, including the NSSL two-moment microphysics scheme
- Support for the regional ensemble data assimilation cycling in restart mode
- Lateral boundary condition handling for regional ensemble cycling
- Tested within the WoFS operational framework for the 2024 and 2025 spring seasons

The regional (limited-area) MPAS is described in:
Skamarock, W. C., M. G. Duda, S. Ha, and S.-H. Park, 2018: Limited-Area Atmospheric Modeling Using an Unstructured Mesh.
Mon. Wea. Rev., 146, 3445-3460, https://doi.org/10.1175/MWR-D-18-0155.1
